Croatian Gastronomy & Croatian Food - The History and Evolution

Where the Influence of History shapes The Cuisine

Croatia’s Gourmet Oasis

There is hardly any country with so many natural beauties on its tiny surface. It is enough to say – “a thousand islands,” and you will immediately recognize Croatia. Eight breathtaking national parks can be found on just 56,000 square meters of land. Croatia has a variety of climates due to its location in multiple different climate zones, including continental countryside in the north, the Dinaric Mountains chain, the lovely Adriatic Sea, and the Mediterranean climate. But it’s not just nature’s beauty that’s plentiful in Croatia. Croatian gastronomy, with its delicious cuisine, is one of the many other reasons why it’s a must-visit destination for gourmets and travelers alike.

Croatia had a turbulent but complex past dating back to the 7th century. The Croatians were originally a Slavic tribe that migrated to the region from the Carpathian Mountains in the east. Various influences ruled the country throughout history: the Illyrians, the Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, the Ottoman Empire, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Each nation has left numerous traces. Of particular importance for today’s Croatia are the rich gastronomic influences, which have shaped themselves into an unforgettable experience for every guest to this day. Croatia is often called a gourmet oasis due to its delicious and diverse cuisine. With a rich history and a location that sits at the crossroads of different culinary traditions, Croatian cuisine has something to offer everyone. Croatia is one of the last places to find a rich selection of organically grown food where you can enjoy the ambiance of almost untouched nature. One of the defining features of Croatian cuisine is its focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. The country’s coastal location means that seafood is a staple of many dishes, with popular options including grilled squid, octopus’ salad, and black risotto made with cuttlefish and squid ink. In addition, Croatian olive oil, widely considered some of the best in the world, is used liberally in many dishes.

Inland Croatian cuisine

Croatian Gastronomy & Food

Inland Croatian cuisine takes on a more rustic character, with hearty and filling dishes. Meat dishes like lamb or pork roasted under a bell-shaped metal lid called a peka, or spit-roasted pig or lamb, are typical. The interior regions of Croatia also produce excellent cheese, with Lički sir being a particular standout. In the eastern part of Slavonia (Croatian region), you’ll find hearty stews and dishes made with paprika and other spices. That’s why one of the joys of Croatian cuisine is the wide variety of traditional dishes in different country regions. For example, Istria, in the northwest, is known for dishes like fuzi pasta with truffles and Istrian prosciutto. At the same time, the Dalmatian coast is famous for its seafood, pasta, and grilled meats. In addition to these dishes, Croatia is known for its wines, particularly those from the Dalmatian region.
Some famous Croatian wines include Plavac Mali, Teran, Malvazija, etc. Read more about them here: Article about Croatian Wines.
