History – inhabited in Roman times (archaeological findings); in the Middle Ages (from 5th-15th century) had many villages and was a place for lepers; population increases from 15th century.
Interesting to see: church of Our Lady near the Sea (around 6th century); St. Andrew (6th/7th century); the church and the Dominican monastery of the Holy Cross (15th century; interesting northern wall built like a fortress for better defense; valuable paintings from XVII. century); Franciscan convent of St. Anthony (17th century; the convent guards the crown made of gilted silver with jewels from 14th century); church of St. Nicholas (14th century); church of St. Peter (16th century); church of St. Tudor (18th century); church of St. Carlo Borromeo (18th century).
Info – 6 settlements; population 6 071; famous for its stone, gravel and several sand and pebble beaches; coastline 43.9 km; highest peak Rudine, 217 m; in Žedno there is an old stone village situated on the top of the island; along the SW side is a small island called Fumija (with beautiful cove and beach, and remains of the late antique or early mediaeval church of St. Fumija and farm buildings of the Benedictine monks from Trogir);
Where to go out: Beach party (only for a few days in August, when night comes all beach Milicevo (in Okrug Gornji) is becoming a dance floor, with famous DJ names, cocktails…); fisherman’s nights (fresh caught grilled fish, good vine and live music).
